I look at my diagnosis as a reminder to Belizean women, the importance of getting regular breast exams and mammograms, and to make a point that breast cancer can affect just about any woman.
In Belize, Cancer still has a stigma that people are afraid of saying they have been diagnosed. May 2025, marked one year since I was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer. There are many women like myself who have or had cervical cancer but due to the stigma, it is hidden. From the moment I was told that my biopsy came back positive, I knew I wanted to be a voice for all who suffer in silence. It would not be a secret I would keep.
Cancer no longer needs to be a death sentence. It is a chapter and not your whole story. There is hope, even in the darkest hours. God sees our pain, hears our prayers, and walks beside us every step of the journey. Know that there is strength in our spirit that no disease can take away- not even cancer, so claim the better days ahead. Tell yourself that you are strong, brave and loved.
